The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has officially opened nominations for the 2026 edition of its Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Awards an initiative aimed at recognizing leadership and measurable progress in advancing inclusion across the global aviation sector. Each award carries a USD 25,000 prize, sponsored by Qatar Airways, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to building a more representative and equitable workforce.
The winners will be announced during IATA’s 82nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) and World Air Transport Summit (WATS), scheduled to take place from 6–8 June 2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Recognizing Leadership and Impact in Aviation
The IATA Diversity & Inclusion Awards highlight excellence across three distinct categories:
- Inspirational Role Model Award – Honors a woman in a senior leadership position within the air transport industry who has made a substantial global impact on diversity and inclusion.
- High Flyer Award – Recognizes a female aviation professional under the age of 40 who has demonstrated leadership and delivered tangible results in promoting inclusion.
- Diversity & Inclusion Team Award – Celebrates an airline that has achieved measurable and positive change in diversity and inclusion. This category is open to all IATA member airlines.
According to IATA Director General Willie Walsh, fostering diversity is not only a social imperative but also an economic necessity for aviation.
“A diverse and inclusive aviation sector is essential to attract the talent needed to support the growth of the industry and enable it to deliver connectivity that underpins trade, tourism, jobs, and economic development,” Walsh said, encouraging industry stakeholders to submit nominations that reflect meaningful progress.
Strategic Importance for Global Aviation
As the aviation industry continues to recover and expand amid growing demand for air travel, workforce development remains a critical priority. Airlines and aviation organizations are competing for skilled professionals across engineering, operations, technology, and leadership roles. Diversity and inclusion initiatives are increasingly seen as central to attracting broader talent pools and improving innovation, safety culture, and long-term sustainability.
By tying recognition to measurable impact—particularly in the Team Award category—IATA is signaling that diversity efforts must go beyond policy statements and translate into concrete organizational outcomes.
Qatar Airways’ Continued Sponsorship
The USD 25,000 prize attached to each award is sponsored by Qatar Airways, either payable directly to the recipient or to a charity of their choice supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives.
In a statement, Qatar Airways emphasized that cross-cultural collaboration is fundamental to aviation’s success, noting that working across diverse backgrounds makes the industry dynamic and globally connected. The airline reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with the awards program and its support for individuals and teams driving long-term progress.
Independent Judging Panel
An independent panel chaired by Karen Walker, Editor-in-Chief of Air Transport World, will evaluate nominations. The panel includes the 2025 award recipients:
- Claudia Zapata-Cardone – Inspirational Role Model (2025)
- Katherine Moloney – High Flyer (2025)
- Christianna Scott – Diversity & Inclusion Team representative (2025), Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Air Canada
This peer-led evaluation model strengthens credibility and ensures that award decisions reflect both industry expertise and practical experience in implementing inclusion strategies.
Key Dates and Industry Outlook
Nominations for the 2026 IATA Diversity & Inclusion Awards close on 5 April 2026. The winners will be formally recognized at the AGM & WATS in Rio de Janeiro, a gathering that traditionally shapes global aviation priorities for the year ahead.
As airlines face evolving operational challenges, technological transformation, and workforce shortages, diversity and inclusion initiatives are increasingly linked to resilience and competitiveness. Industry analysts note that organizations embracing inclusive leadership structures are better positioned to adapt to change and serve global passenger markets.
By spotlighting role models, rising professionals, and high-performing airline teams, IATA’s 2026 awards aim not only to celebrate achievement but also to set benchmarks for the broader aviation ecosystem.
